The 2007 Essex Closed Squash Competition was held on the weekend of 20th & 21st of January . Around a 100 of Essex elite squash players took part in this year’s event which drew a huge enthusiastic crowd throughout the weekend who were treated to plenty of superb action!

The Men’s & Ladies A finals were last on, the men’s A saw world no 61 & England no 19 Lee Drew up against last years winner Phil Barker, they treated the spectators to a spectacular match. Both players thrilling the crowd with amazing arrays of shots, long rally’s and unbelievable retrieving, with Lee eventual beating Phil heralded with raucous applause from the crowd. This had been preceded by a superb Ladies A event, Kingwoods Sarah Neller reached the final again this year beating off her sister Philippa and team rival Lynda Stiffel in the early rounds only to be confronted yet again with ex world no 7 Rebecca Macree, despite a valiant effort from Sarah, Becky proved to strong, using all her experience to force Sarah in to second place again.

The other finals had kicked off earlier with the Men's Plate where Ongars Mark McEwen beat Paul Wallace in a gripping 3-2 match. In the Men's O'35 number 1 seed Dave Lazarus from Redbridge was beaten this year by Connaughts Jason Friend Jason winning 3 – 0. The Men's O'55 was won by Kingwoods new comer to the age group (and Chairman of Essex Squash) Dave Neller beating last years winner Ron hills in the semis and Chelmsfords Chris Nutt in an hour long final. In the Ladies O'50's Svril Murphy beat last years winner Sue Vine and then went on to play in a grueling O’40’s match which she lost to Jackie Gregory from Chelmsford.

May & Baker’s Sean Cole lost his title of the past 3 years in the Men’s C being beaten in a marathon hour and a half long game by youngster Alex Lemom from Connaught, Alex rank 10th in the UK under 15’s. The path to the Men’s B final had been grueling yet again for Francis Engerer from YMCA which took it’s toll as he was beaten by Club Kingswoods Anthony Savage in a heated match. Chelmsford ’s Stuart Court won the Men’s O'45's beating a very determined Tony Morrison from Club Woodham. The ladies B was played as a round robin with Michelle Higgings coming 1st, Kingswoods Hannah Payne & Lucy Remmington 2nd & 3rd respectively.

The weekend was a great success pulling in players and spectators from all over Essex . Matches were exiting, fairly contested and marking was to a high standard thanks to a sterling effort by Sue Woodhouse who provided a superb pool of markers and referees.
