The 2007
Essex Closed Squash Competition was held
on
the weekend of 20th & 21st of January . Around a 100 of
Essex
elite squash players took part in this year’s event which drew a huge
enthusiastic crowd throughout the weekend who were treated to plenty of
superb action!
The Men’s & Ladies A finals were last on, the men’s A saw world no 61 &
England
no 19 Lee Drew
up against last years winner Phil
Barker, they treated the spectators to a spectacular match. Both players
thrilling the crowd with amazing arrays of shots, long rally’s and
unbelievable retrieving, with Lee eventual beating Phil heralded with
raucous applause from the crowd. This had been preceded by a superb Ladies
A event, Kingwoods Sarah Neller reached the final again this year beating off her sister
Philippa and team rival Lynda Stiffel in the early rounds only to be
confronted yet again with ex world no 7 Rebecca
Macree, despite a valiant effort from Sarah, Becky proved to strong,
using all her experience to force Sarah in to second place again.
The other
finals had kicked off earlier with the Men's Plate where Ongars Mark McEwen beat Paul Wallace
in a gripping 3-2 match. In the Men's O'35 number 1 seed Dave
Lazarus from Redbridge was beaten this year by Connaughts Jason
Friend Jason winning 3 – 0. The Men's O'55 was won by Kingwoods
new comer to the age group (and Chairman of Essex Squash) Dave Neller beating last years winner Ron hills in the semis and
Chelmsfords Chris Nutt in an hour long final. In the Ladies O'50's Svril
Murphy beat last years winner Sue
Vine and then went on to play in a grueling O’40’s match which she
lost to Jackie Gregory from
Chelmsford.
May & Baker’s Sean Cole
lost his title of the past 3 years in the Men’s C being beaten in a
marathon hour and a half long game by youngster Alex
Lemom from Connaught, Alex rank 10th in the UK under 15’s.
The path to the Men’s B final had been grueling yet again for Francis
Engerer from YMCA which took it’s toll as he was beaten by Club
Kingswoods Anthony Savage in a heated match.
Chelmsford
’s
Stuart
Court
won the Men’s O'45's beating a very
determined Tony Morrison from
Club Woodham. The ladies B was played as a round robin with Michelle
Higgings coming 1st, Kingswoods Hannah Payne & Lucy
Remmington 2nd & 3rd respectively.
The weekend
was a great success pulling in players and spectators from all over
Essex
. Matches were exiting, fairly contested and marking was to a high
standard thanks to a sterling effort by Sue
Woodhouse who provided a superb pool of markers and referees. All
finalists received a trophy and prize thanks to generous sponsorship from
the local businesses listed below. Peter
