ESSEX LADIES PREMIER CUP

Sept 10 2007

A NEW INTER-AREA COMPETITION FOR THE TOP ESSEX WOMEN

This new competition – originally the brainchild of Essex coach Chris Vine – got off to a good start with the first two rounds of matches at the Connaught Club on Saturday 14th October.  Most of the top 20 in Essex gathered together in 4 teams, namely:-  NORTH, captained by Sue Vine; SOUTH & EAST, headed by Lynda Stiffel; CENTRAL, led by Jackie Gregory; and WEST, captained by Zoe Merry.

After a day of some excellent squash, coupled with a few injuries and retirements, the NORTH emerged as the early pace-setters with a couple of 3/0 wins.

POINTS TABLE:-

          1. NORTH                    28

          2. SOUTH & EAST      18

          3. WEST                       16

          4. CENTRAL                7

RESULTS:-

          NORTH BEAT CENTRAL 3/0

WEST beat SOUTH & EAST 2/1

          NORTH beat WEST 3/0

SOUTH & EAST beat CENTRAL 2/1

The third and final round of matches took place at Woodford Wells on Sunday 3rd June, in beautiful weather more appropriate to cricket and tennis than squash, and the NORTH area (led by Sue Vine) emerged as the overall season winners, with Zoe Merry’s WEST area as runners-up.

The NORTH squad comprised Lauren Selby, Sue Vine, Nikki Taylor, Sarah Hunt and Louise Hunt

Thanks to Chris Vine for the original idea and for his support, and to Zoe Merry for acting as very capable general organiser.  It is hoped to continue this competition next season – with minor adjustments – as it provides good camaraderie and hard practice for our top twenty players.
